PIGS IN SPACE by nasubionna PIGS IN SPACE by nasubionna
PIIIIIGS IIIIN SPAAAAACE!!!

The new Muppets movie got me feeling all nostalgic and inspired to do some fan art. Pigs In Space is one of my favorite skits, and I would dearly love to see them revisit it (oh, if only they'd had one in the new movie... but seeing Strangepork and Link in their Swinetrek uniforms in the background did make me gleeful)!
I'm quite pleased with this, though I think Miss Piggy is definitely the weakest likeness here. The font is a fan-made old school Star Trek font that I found online and hand traced from a print out onto the art. Everything is Copic marker and Prismacolor pencil on vellum bristol board, except I used Photoshop to put in the dark blue background and also to put the white sparkles on their uniforms. I would have done them by hand, but I don't have a white paint pen! I'll have to buy one and then I can finish this up properly. It's 14 x 17 inches, so it's quite large and I had to scan it in 3 pieces and stick it back together in Photoshop.
Super fun to draw!

It makes *my* little art happy when someone can make something like so smooth and solid with traditional art. I still can't get it right myself.

I wish they the full opening of "Pigs in Space" during the third, forth, and fifth Season of the Muppet Show. You know what I am referring to. As in after the swinetrek ship flies as the narrator went "And now....PIIIIGS IIIIN SPAAAACE!!!" Two shooting stars would come out and then character's heads zoom up (Like the Viacom V of Doom) As the narrator introduces the characters. "Staring with The incredible Captain Link Hogthrob, The adorable first mate Miss Piggy, and the mad scientist Dr. Julius Strangepork." And then goes to the main story. But I don't know why cut that opening for Season 3, 4, and 5. I just don't get it.

I guess they figured that after the 1st season it wasn't necessary, as the audience would know who they were. *shrug* I agree, though, that it was fun to hear what new descriptions they would come up with for each pig!

There was no Pigs In Space during the first season of The Muppet Show. Pigs in Space was introduced for the second season.

Beautiful! Your colors really pop and I love how you captured Link's egotism, Miss Piggy's sass and the doctor's sweet eccentricity! This was a very funny skit on a very funny show. If I'm not mistaken these three pigs also did a spoof of General Hospital on the show (also funny). I loved this show and I wish that they would bring it back! :)

Thanks for the nice comment! I'm glad you like the drawing.
You are close... the General Hospital spoof had Miss Piggy, but the other two characters were Rowlf and Janice. Also hilarious! :D

Love this! You've done an excellent job! I often work in a size where when I scan I have to put it back together in Photoshop too, so I know how that can be. I have to disagree with you when you said that Miss Piggy is the weakest likeness. I think she looks perfect, and since there were so many Miss Piggy muppets used throughout the run of The Muppet Show, there's no way to pinpoint one as THE Miss Piggy. You've managed to capture that 1970s Miss Piggy quite well. Even though I've gotten used to the blonde Miss Piggy of the past 25 years, I still miss this look for her. The brown hair just suited her. Still, I'm glad the 80s perm Piggy is long gone!

I enjoyed reading your description of how you use the different mediums to build up the image. You should be very proud of this one!

Wow, thanks for this super nice comment! Good point about Miss Piggy and her various looks. I also prefer her late 70's look to the ultra modern blonde look she has now, but I just need to remind myself that Miss Piggy just keeps up with the fashion of the times, and it's not 1978 anymore! But yes, the 1980s perm never needs to return (for any of us!)
Anyway, thanks again for the lovely comment. :) I enjoyed checking out your gallery - great stuff, and it's always nice to see another artist sticking primarily to traditional media!

I always prefer 70s Piggy. Actually I'm really picky and my most favorite Miss Piggy version was the one used in The Muppet Movie. There was just something about her eyes in that one. Some would argue they looked almost cross-eyed, but I think it's the best and most glamorous she's looked. That's one thing about her versus the other muppets. She evolves her look (for better or worse) while the others retain their general appearance decade after decade.

Thanks so much for taking a look at my gallery and the compliments on my work. Yep, I am a traditional artist and will continue to be. I just feel so much more at home with it, and to me nothing beats the feeling of working with actual pigment.

BEST MUPPETS SKIT EVER CREATED. This is lovely, especially the varying degrees of shading you used for fabrics, metals, skin, and hair. Lovely, lovely!

Thanks, sis! I had a blast drawing it, and am currently in nostalgia overload thanks to this person who uploaded all of the Pigs in Spaces in chronological order, god bless them: [link]
I think I find Miss Piggy's exasperation at her male cohorts so funny because it's so relate-able, haha...

The sequined detail, and likeness of the uniforms is wonderful... and Link's likeness is sublime, as always. You gave him so much love. <3

I adore Link. He's so hilarious and fun to draw. I'm thinking very seriously of making Link paperdolls, to showcase all his fantastic outfits, though I think you and I are the only two people who would appreciate that. Sometimes it seems like we're the only two Link fangirls on the internet, haha....

The Link paper dolls would be awesome, but I'd also love to see you do a Miss Piggy paper doll showcasing her various looks and wigs throughout the past 35 years. That would be hilarious! I did one myself once when I was a kid, getting the idea from a Baby Miss Piggy paper doll I picked up in a store.

Hmmmm, maybe I'll have to do a Link and Piggy set? Two nattily dressed swine superstars, with all their various outfits (and in her case, hairdos) over the decades.... would be super fun to do. Thanks for the encouragement, maybe I shall do just that, now that I know someone out there would find that entertaining other than myself. :)

I would definitely be a fan of that. I could see you using The Muppet Show stage costumes for Miss Piggy along with her various ensembles from the first three muppet films. Right off the top of my head, I'm not as familiar with Link's costumes, but I'm sure there are plenty from The Muppet Show alone.

Actually, there are three... <3 You, I, and my dear friend on the Muppet Central Forums. But on dA, we're the only two. Whee... <3

Ooo... Link Hogthrob paperdolls? We get to dress him up...? And see him in his boxers/briefs...? <3 LOL! I would totally adore that. xD I totally appreciate any Link-related art, no matter what concept it's in.

I must say you've given so much love, and respect for Link. He's indeed fun to draw, but I'm like, in love with your Link drawings... so much depth, and apperciation. I love that. :3

And you're welcome. You're so awesome. x333
